Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS)
Dear Parents,
We want to adequately plan for the birth of your baby and prepare you for this exciting time in your life. It is important for your baby’s health as well as your own that we are aware if you are on prescription medications or street drugs. Some examples of these are:
Prescriptions Such As:
- Fentanyl
- Hydromorphone
- Methadone
- Morphine
- OxyNeo
- OxyContin
- Percocet (Oxycodone)
- Subutex
- Tylenol #3
- Vicodin
Street Drugs Such As:
- Cocaine
- Crack
- Ecstasy
- Heroin
- Oxys
- Speed
When a mother takes one or more of the above mentioned medications, Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) can result. NAS refers to the symptoms that can develop in a baby after birth when the baby is no longer exposed to the medications. This syndrome is also referred to as “withdrawal”. Your baby may remain in the hospital for an extended period of time, for example, a total of 5-7 days. In addition, your baby may go home on medication.
If you are on any of the above medications or street drugs, please inform your obstetrical practitioner. We will then develop a plan of care which may include a possible need for medication and additional observation time after birth. For additional information, please consult with your physician.
