Obstetrical Services

Our practice is passionate about pregnancy!

Whether you're planning for your first child or adding another child to your family, we're always prepared and delighted to be part of this exciting journey. At the OBGYN Group of Eastern Connecticut, we believe the best time for you to see an obstetrician is before you get pregnant. A few simple, painless tests will determine your reproductive health and put you on the right track for a healthy pregnancy.

Our Obstetricians and Certified Nurse Midwives assure that you will receive continuous care from our professional staff throughout your pregnancy. We will be with you from preconception planning to prenatal care to monitoring fetal development and ensuring a safe delivery. Our prenatal patients are scheduled with both our Obstetricians and Certified Nurse Midwives throughout their pregnancy. We feel this is important as it provides an opportunity for our patients, physicians, and midwives to get to know each other.

Our services include: pre-pregnancy advice, counseling, and testing to help achieve pregnancy, routine and high risk prenatal care, and postpartum care and counseling. Early and continued care for mothers-to-be is very important.

Every Delivery Is Special

We have always considered it an honor and a privilege to participate in the birth of a new life. Each delivery is SPECIAL. We are grateful to our patients for allowing us to be a part of that magic moment in their lives.

The OBGYN Group of Eastern Connecticut provides individualized care for all our patients and delivers babies exclusively at Manchester Memorial Hospital's, state-of-the-art, SMB Charitable Foundation Family Birthing Center facility, where mothers enjoy such amenities as specially designed LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery and Postpartum) rooms, spa room for water therapy, and water births.

The enhanced neonatal program at Manchester Hospital assures parents that infants will receive excellent pediatric care close to home in their time of special need. Every medical problem can mean a special challenge, especially for babies who are born prematurely or who need special care. At the Special Care Nursery at Manchester Hospital enhanced neonatal coverage is offered around the clock, with board-certified neonatologists and neonatology-trained APRNs, PAs, and nurses.

We want you to feel comfortable with and confident in each of us, and we want to be fully informed about you, as well. Babies do not necessarily arrive on schedule, and by being completely familiar with your medical circumstances, our team of professionals can provide the best medical care available for you and your baby.

What to Expect On Your First Prenatal Visit

Prenatal care is medical care for women both before and during pregnancy. Prenatal care is used to ensure a healthy pregnancy for both the mother and developing baby. Prenatal care can help detect and treat problems promptly, prevent complications, and refer women to appropriate specialists when necessary. In the United States, prenatal care has resulted in a reduced number of maternal deaths, miscarriages, and birth defects.

During this our professional staff will spend time learning about you and your past medical, surgical, and family history. A complete physical examination will take place and ultrasounds are frequently performed to help determine a precise due date. Routine prenatal lab work will also be ordered. Information and educational material regarding your pregnancy will also be provided as well as information about Manchester Memorial Hospital where you will deliver.

It is recommended that all women who are considering becoming pregnant visit their doctor for a pre-pregnancy health care check-up. Otherwise, women should contact their doctor as soon as they suspect they are pregnant. Receiving prenatal care is especially important for women with high-risk pregnancies.

At your first visit, your physician will assess your overall health and review your medical history. Bring a list of your current medications for your doctor to review. In some instances, certain medications may be harmful to a developing baby and are replaced with a similar medication that is not harmful. Your blood pressure, height, and weight will be measured. Your doctor may conduct a pelvic examination. Blood tests and urine tests may be conducted as well. Your doctor will recommend prenatal vitamins, including folic acid. Folic acid can help significantly reduce the risk of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida.

Your doctor will determine an appointment schedule to closely monitor your pregnancy. Generally, monthly appointments are made for the first six months of pregnancy. Appointments are usually every two weeks during the seventh and eighth months and weekly in the ninth month of pregnancy. Women with high-risk pregnancies will have more frequent appointments.

Your blood pressure, blood, and urine will be tested periodically throughout your pregnancy. Ultrasound is also used if a problem is suspected.

Prenatal testing helps to ensure that problems in a pregnancy receive prompt attention. It enables you to communicate with your doctor and discuss any concerns. You should follow your doctor's instructions carefully and attend all of your appointments.

At the OBGYN Group of Eastern Connecticut you get the attention and care you deserve before, during, and after pregnancy. Simply put, it is the comprehensive obstetrics care you expect when you're expecting.     RETURN TO TOP »
